Speaker Bio
Dr. Ta-lin Hsu is Founder and Chairman of H&Q Asia Pacific and has been investing in Silicon Valley and Asia for over 20 years. He joined Hambrecht & Quist Group in 1985 and founded H&QAP in 1986. Since inception, H&QAP has managed over $2.6 billion in capital, operates 7 offices throughout the region and has invested in more than 325 companies. Prior to H&QAP, Dr. Hsu worked at IBM and held corpo-rate responsibility for IBM’s advanced research in mass storage sys-tems.
H&Q Asia Pacific is recognized as a pioneer of Asian venture capital and private equity as the first firm to bring “Silicon Valley” style ven-ture capital to Taiwan in 1986, one of the first funds to enter China in 1993, one of the first firms to successfully migrate an international retail brand to China (Starbucks) and the first firm to take a foreign company public on the Emerging Markets Board of the Taiwan Stock Exchange in 2009 (Array Networks). One of H&Q AP’s portfolios, Fa-brinet was named by Wall Street Journal as the best-performance IPO from the past year for a return of 135%.
Dr. Hsu was a founding member of Taiwan’s Technology Review Board and the Monte Jade Science & Technology organization. He serves as a board member of such leading companies as Marvell Semiconductor, Primax and ASE, is an advisor to the Haas Business School at U.C. Berkeley, a member of Committee of 100, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Give2Asia, and represents H&QAP at the
World Economic Forum.
Dr. Hsu has been recognized by Business Week in its “Stars of Asia” ranking, Forbes magazine as one of the 25 Top Tech Deal Makers in 2007, one of the Top Deal Makers in 2008 as well as one of the 25 Notable Chinese-Americans in 2008; and New Fortune Magazine as one of “100 People Influencing China’s and the World’s Capital Flow” in 2009.
Dr. Hsu received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from U.C. Berkeley and a B.S. degree in Physics from National Taiwan University, from which he received the “Outstanding Alumni Award” in 2009.
